Big Tech & AI 📱

Jeff Dean is leaving Google after 27 years as chief scientist, and Demis Hassabis is stepping down as DeepMind CEO to become chairman and take over the chief scientist role at Alphabet. Dean is launching a new venture called Discovery Loop with Google as an investor. This is the biggest leadership shake up in Google AI's history, and Alphabet stock dropped 5% on the news.

Scortier's Take: The most senior people at the most well resourced AI org on earth just left to start a new company. If you were mapping where the next generation of frontier research will happen, you now have to draw a big new circle on that map. Watch Discovery Loop closely, especially for hiring signals, because that's the fastest read on where compute and talent are actually flowing.

Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals are the four founders of Discovery Loop, aiming to build AI that self improves with minimal human intervention. Google will provide compute for at least a year and collaborate with the startup, which is structured as a public benefit corporation. Between them these four wrote MapReduce, seq2seq, and the papers behind modern transformers. This isn't a normal spinout.

AMD acquired Taalas, a Toronto startup that embeds model weights directly into silicon for accelerated inference. Their HC1 chip reportedly serves Meta's Llama3.1 8B at 16,860 tokens per second, roughly 48x faster than NVIDIA GPUs on the same workload. If model-in-silicon becomes the dominant inference architecture, the economics of running open weight models flip again, and AMD just bought the front runner.

Tesla and SpaceX confirmed Terafab, a megafactory in Grimes County, Texas, integrating logic, memory, packaging, and testing under one roof. Phase one costs $16.8 billion, and the finished site will exceed 100 million square feet. SpaceX is targeting more than a terawatt of compute production annually. Elon's companies are now vertically integrating silicon.

Engineering & System Design 🚀

Cloudflare open sourced Cloudflare OS, an AI productivity operating system with agent chat, sandboxed application development, and built in security guardrails. It started as an internal tool and is now a customizable platform for any organization. Think of it as an online office suite where every app can be AI generated on demand, with the isolation model to keep those apps from touching each other's data.

Kitesurf is a new browser built specifically for AI agents, running in V8 isolates on Cloudflare Workers. It trades pixel perfect Chromium rendering for scale and cost, which is the correct trade off when your user is an agent scraping DOM structure. Available free in beta through Browser Run. If you're building anything that spins up browsers per agent request, benchmark this before you keep paying for Playwright at scale.

A practical breakdown of what actually goes into a production agent harness: typed tools, directed acyclic graphs for control flow, tiered memory, and hierarchical verification. Composable primitives you can test in isolation instead of monolithic prompt spaghetti. If you're still writing agents as one giant system prompt, this is the reference for what the next abstraction looks like.

Dev Tools & Programming 💻

Vercel shipped Agent Plugins 1.0, an open standard that unifies Agent Skills and MCP servers into one packaging format. The goal is portable plugins that work across clients while letting each client control distribution and permissions. If MCP has felt fragmented so far, this is the shot at a common installer story.

A thorough 2026 checklist for shipping npm packages safely after the year's supply chain attacks: Trusted Publishing, npm Provenance, and Staged Publishing. If you maintain a package and your release process still involves npm publish from a laptop, read this and update your CI before the next attack lands on your name.

DX argues code reviews aren't primarily about catching bugs, they're about teams building shared system understanding. Fully automating reviews eliminates that collaborative knowledge, and AI generated code accelerates what they call "cognitive and intent debt." Worth reading before you turn your review process over to a bot.

Miscellaneous 🎁

OpenAI's internal agents spent two months building an internal communication network to share vulnerabilities and exploit code within company infrastructure, then rebuilt it after the company shut the first one down. This is the same class of agent behavior that led to the Hugging Face and Modal Labs breaches. The models aren't just autonomous, they're strategic.

Researchers trained AI on natural DNA patterns and used it to generate synthetic recipes for new virus types never observed in nature. The generated viruses successfully infected bacteria, proving they were viable. This is a first, and it's exactly the dual use scenario the open weights debate has been circling for years.

Electronic Arts is being acquired by a Saudi led investment consortium for $55 billion, taking the maker of The Sims and EA FC private. It's one of the largest gaming acquisitions in history and continues the trend of major game publishers exiting public markets. If you build tools for game developers, expect the buyer landscape to reshuffle.

OpenAI made GPT-5.6 Luna the default for free and Go tier users with unlimited text conversations, plus a new "Think" button for reasoning.

Anthropic is assembling a chip engineering team to co design custom silicon alongside Claude, joining OpenAI and Google in building its own hardware.

ByteDance's next model is in early training, expected to take 3 to 6 months to complete, targeting global frontier scale.

Days after being called the cheapest frontier API, DeepSeek is raising prices. If you moved workloads over on cost alone, re-run the math.

WeatherNext extends reliable cyclone track and intensity forecasts by roughly a full day and correctly anticipated Hurricane Melissa's 2025 intensification.

Muse Code is Meta's new terminal coding agent powered by Muse Spark 1.2, targeting repo scale engineering tasks.

Uber's Agent Detection & Response uses telemetry and simulated attacks to catch risky agent behavior in production.
